Removed the module and the system defaulted to classic metacity, however, the Additional Drivers utility still thinks the driver is installed and in use.

Fallback process failed, and the machine was left in a hung state. Re-copied the kernel module back into place, and it started functioning properly again.

System did not start. Had to go to terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) and move the module back. After that everything back to normal. Same result as last week

Fallback to classic mode with failure to load nvidia module after renaming. Hardware driver show that nvidia recommended driver is installed and activated. Remove and Activate restored the driver.

Rebooted successfully into classic desktop.

I had the same experience as tinche & chadadavis-mac. If I try to install the driver again via "Additional Drivers" on the Administration menu, it shows that the Nvidia driver is activated and currently in use.

Note also, on another setup of Natty I have, if I select to install the restricted software as part of the initial installation of the OS, I get this same problem. The Nvidia driver shows as activated and in use, but the OS boots to the classic desktop instead of Unity and driver clearly isn't in use and there is no obvious way to make Natty use this driver.

Fallback works correctly now.
However, when on nouveau, jockey still shows nvidia as active, which prevents it from being reinstalled, until it has first been uninstalled.

Passedosmoma2011-04-02 18:45

System boots up into Ubuntu classic.

Passedtinche2011-04-02 12:59

System boots up into Ubuntu classic!

Xorg.0.log mentions NOUVEAU a lot, but no Unity (even glxinfo craps out: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0"). I haven't installed experimental Nouveau module from jockey at this time.

Jockey claims the proprietary driver is activated and currently in use, no option to reinstall (only remove).
