The driver was installed but compiz refused to launch, it's unlikely to be a driver issue.
compiz --replace says : compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't load plugin 'ccp'

and sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins-extra says
compiz-plugins-extra : Depends: compiz-core-abiversion-20110224 but it is not installable
I should wait this dependency problem to be resolved before continuing the tests.

NVidia 7300 LE, had to start with nomodeset selected to even begin and at about 80% the system gave a message (without any IDs or anything) that installation had failed and got me into a live session instead, of course with poor quality graphics.

NVidia 8600GT, same bug as previous releases. 2D fallback fails to bring a graphic environment so the option must be added logging with a textual terminal. Definitely too hard for a newbie.

Everything went OK...

xorg.conf was absent in the beginning as usual...
After driver installation, xorg.conf has been successfully created:

[...]
Driver "nvidia"
[...]

After rebooting GUI starts up without any problems having the nvidia driver loaded.
