Same as Sheerio (beside of the TORCS FPS) but: Both before the installation and after the deinstallation of the proprietary driver I got a fallback standard Gnome desktop. lsmod reported that nouveau is running though. Only after installing the experimental free driver I got the Unity desktop and basic 3D capabilities (flickering in games, ~22FPS in Nexuiz at high versus 40-50FPS with the proprietary driver; Unity is running fine though) back.

Xorg.0.log says couldn't open module nvidia and nv
but Nouveau and Vesa loaded fine.
