OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 9500 GT/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
Same problem with glxgears (reports high framerate but the gears hardly move on screen).
If I turn on "Sync to VBlank" in nvidia-settings, glxgears runs fine, at the expected 60 fps. Although when I maximize glxgears, it shows tearing a few centimeters below the top of the screen. The vertical sync seems to work insofar that glxgears runs at the same refresh rate as my monitor, but it seems to render just out of phase.
The 3D game Warsow seems to run great with both "Sync to VBlank" on and off, but also shows the same tearing effect a few centimeters from the top of the screen.

OpenGL renderer string: NVS 3100M/PCI/SSE2
glxgears
19191 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3838.070 FPS
19397 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3879.231 FPS
19411 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3882.009 FPS
19404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3880.741 FPS
19436 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3887.027 FPS
glxgears works really badly, as reported by others.
tuxracer and blender seem to run fine.

Blender Benchmark "draw":
0.000188 s/op - 5315.51 ops/s - 26578 iterations
Pymol renders quickly and smoothly, no artifacts, no lags.
glxgears also does not work correctly for me. Shows high frame rates (~17000), but runs very slowly and slows down the rest of the desktop (compiz). Probably an issue within glxgears. Other application work well.

$ glxgears
32996 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6599.192 FPS
Glxgears run really badly. The gears are hardly moving and it's very difficult to move the window. The fans in the cabin or GPU kick in.
While TORCS, The Open Racing Car Simulator runs very smoothly.

Blender: work without problems. Size of scene 21Mb
glxgears: 48098 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9619.449 FPS.
Bad. One of the cores loaded 100%
The system starts incredibly slow
